Walking In and Around Bewdley
Walking In and Around Bewdley
A short walk in any direction from the town centre takes you into beautiful countryside encompassing river paths, ancient woodland, meadows, neighbouring villages and spectacular views.
The two mile Ribbesford Circular has been upgraded and is clearly waymarked and also has information panels enroute. It is accessible to both pushchairs and mobility vehicles via easy access gateways. A free colour leaflet, containing a map, brief route description and information about local wildlife and history, is available from Bewdley's Tourist Information Centre, Bewdley library or directly from the Worcestershire Countryside Service. Pick the route up at Gardner's Meadow car park.
A walk along the riverside out of town from Dog Lane car park will lead you all the way to Upper Arley (approx 4 miles). Download an article describing the route from the link on the right. If intending to come back to Bewdley by the Severn Valley Railway steam train, make sure you check the timetable at www.svr.co.uk before setting off.
Alternatively, a 3 mile circular walk involves following the same path for about half a mile then turning left at Dowles Brook. For guidance ask at the Tourist Information Centre for "Bewdley Walk 2".
The Stourport Circular Walk begins in Bewdley’s town centre and heads along the river to Stourport and back along cycle route Route 45 into town, passing Stourport's heritage canal basins on the way. The route is roughly 6 miles long. To pick up a leaflet, visit the Tourist Information Centre in the Guildhall on Load Street.
The Wyre Forest Visitor Centre at Callow Hill (01299 266944) is an abundant source of information about the area. The Forest has a network of paths and multi-user trails, and hosts a busy programme of led health walks. www.wyreforest.net
If you feel up to the challenge, the Worcestershire Way is a 31-mile countryside trail along the western edge of Worcestershire connecting Bewdley with the Malvern Hills. Along the Way are the woodlands of Wyre Forest and rolling hills. The terrain is gentle and rich rather than severe. The Way was amended slightly in 2004 and now starts in Bewdley Town Centre and finishes in Malvern. The route is clearly marked on OS maps, and a guide to the entire route is also available from the Tourist information Centre.
For those looking for a shorter town based stroll, the Bewdley Civic Society has created a short Town Trail, taking in many of Bewdley's historic buildings. The guide to the trail is available from Bewdley Tourist Information Office (01299 404740)
