Cycling In and Around Bewdley
Bewdley is ideally located for cycling as route 45 of the National Cycle Network passes straight through the centre of the town. The views of the River Severn from one of the riverside cafés, pubs and tea rooms provide an ideal spot to take a break en route.
Southbound from Bewdley, route 45 links to the canal basin town of Stourport-on-Severn and northbound, with the woodland areas of the Wyre Forest. From the Wyre Forest follow the warrior markers of the Mercian Way all the way to Bridgnorth passing through the picturesque village of Arley and the Severn Valley Country Park at Alveley, now a reinstated area of woodland, meadows and wetland after the closure of the Highley and Alveley Collieries in 1969. As the trail criss-crosses the River Severn and meanders through wooded areas there is rich variety of wildlife to spot along the route.
The Mercian Way, in its entirety forms a 200 mile heritage trail running through the former ancient Kingdom of Mercia from Salisbury to Chester. Mercia was once ruled by the powerful Offa, the first man to claim the title King of England.
